The State Sustainable Mobility Platform is a program developed by the Government of the State of Santa Catarina, with the -cooperation of municipalities, universities and the organized civil society, to foster and support municipalities to adopt and implement sustainable transport policies in urban and rural areas.

The objective of the initiative is to provide a better quality of life in the municipalities of Santa Catarina through urban planning and transport policies aiming to reduce air pollution (or: emissions), noise and accidents; stimulate public transport use and non motorised trips and provide better accessibility for people with special mobility needs.

Through political, technical and community actions, the SSMP is set to:
(i) enhance the conscience of hazards of indiscriminate use of private motorised vehicles;
(ii) increase public transport use;
(iii) create a friendly attitude towards non-motorised modes of transport(NMT);
(iv) promote cycling and walking in health, education, transport, traffic sectors;
(v) stimulate spatial and land use planning for NMT journeys;
(vi) increase walking;
(vii) increase cycling;
(viii) reduce accidents involving pedestrians and cyclists;
(ix) reform transport sector budget in favour of NMT projects and public space;
(x) stimulate the implementation of infrastructure for walking, cycling and for people with special mobility needs.

The SSMP was originally an initiative of CICLOBRASIL (www.udesc.br/ciclo), a research and extension program to promote bicycle use, formed by the State University of Santa Catarina UDESC, in cooperation with Bicycle Users Association of Florianópolis and Region VIACICLO (www.viaciclo.org.br), counting on the partnership of the international programs:

International capacity building program composed by nine NGO’s from Asia, Africa, Latin America and the Dutch NGO I-CE, Interface for Cycling Expertise. The aim is to provide exchange between and technical support to the initiatives and projects of its members to substantively improve the situation of cycling in their cities.

World Carfree Network grew out of the activities of Car Busters. The network works at an international level to promote alternatives to car
dependence, and works to reduce the human impact on the natural environment while improving the quality of life for all.

The International Forum for Rural Transport and Development is a network of individuals and organisations to facilitate and promote the successful application of policies and practices that will satisfy the accessibility and mobility needs of women, men and children in rural areas.
